Networking how-to: know your contacts

Who is in your active network?

Could you list them by name, right now?

Try this: without accessing your cell phone or other electronic device,  think about the people who are in your daily life. Consider the people that you live next door to, work with, commute with, sit next to in class, see regularly at the store, the meetings and the various gatherings that you attend.

These people are in your ACTIVE network, and while you may not think of them belonging to your “professional business network,” they are in your world. And that counts for a lot.

The good news is that these are the easiest relationships to tap into because of the proximity and regularity in your life. Leveraging this valuable resource all begins with knowing who is in your world.

GOAL for this week:

Complete the My World Exercise™, listing as many people as you can from the various groups and affiliations that you belong to. Take a few moments of quiet time to complete this list. (download the free template by clicking here: My World Exercise_networking master list)

Probe your memory banks and once that is exhausted, then and only then, access your cell phone, Blackberry, iPhone or on-line database of contacts. Now, add these names to your list.  See how your list grows quickly. Keep this list handy and continue to add to it. There is value in keeping your contacts top of YOUR mind.

p.s. Next week, we’ll discuss how you can be sure that you stay top of THEIR mind.
